[Everyone will wake up suddenly, as if having drifted off -- while sitting upright in an uncomfortable office chair. In one hand they're holding the communicator, and in their lap is propped a clipboard with a job application (standard, looking something like this; it requests up to ten years of job history, ) and a pen. The waiting room is also fairly standard, except for being empty.]

[The communicator's lock screen reads, Complete the job application. Time limit, twenty-four hours.]

[There are magazines, fake plants, and computers. There's a staff lounge with food -- tupperware that might have belonged to some of these nonexistent workers, popcorn and cocoa packets, vending machines -- and restrooms. There are exits, but characters will be unable to use them... or make their own, or escape in any way.]

[So the characters are stuck here, until tomorrow morning. Set up a comment telling everyone what your character is doing, and thinking, whether they're obeying the task or not, at any time during the day. Then tag other people! Be sure to check back later in the week, when people are encouraged make threads for the evening as well as the day! Characters that have been claimed are also welcome at this point to join the community, and will be able to make their own posts, which can be tagged by anyone taking part in the event.]

[her lips quirk up] Yes, of course. I did not mean to suggest that the beings were not real. We most certainly are.

[ you keep talking like that. unfortunately, Buffy has exactly the two kinds of supernatural interaction ]

You're very pretty for a demon. [ said with a straight face ]

[you're a confusing mortal, Buffy. okay. well. frowns a tiny bit] You make it difficult to know whether I am meant to take the compliment or take offense.

[offense, she settles on, at least in the sense of being tinily irritated. demons. does she look horned and aflame to you? Sif folds her arms] I care not for what humans call me, but so you know, demons refer to something else. My people are called Asgardians.

[antiapocalypse]

Right. My bad. [ "humanity impaired", she decides! it does sound kind of familiar, though she's having trouble placing it. more familiar with the Greek and Roman stuff, and even that she has kind of jumbled together in her head. school is not Buffy's strongest point. ] So... No blood-sucking, or human-killing of any kind?

[actlikealady]

What? [she is genuinely too surprised to be offended for a beat! and then, emphatically] Of course not. My people have protected your realm from invaders for millennia!

[antiapocalypse]

[ well, you've done a great job! ]

[ probably not the best tact to take, Buffy ]

Funny, and all this time I thought it was up to me. [ welp, no one said she was the queen of tactful ]

[actlikealady]

[frankly] If you have single-handedly repelled the star-faring savages from the Badoon worlds over this last millennium or so, I apologize for your trouble, and applaud your industry. As far as I was aware, the threat of Asgard's armies has kept them from slaughtering their way into the territory under our protection ever since they saw what we did to the frost giants who dared invade your planet.

[antiapocalypse]

I don't really know what any of those things are. [ positively chipper ] But I've stopped the world from ending. Four, maybe five times. [ let's see, there's The Master, the Judge, Adam, and then a couple of incidental baby apocalypses... ]

I'm guessing you guys are too big and fancy to have actually heard of me, [ even the Initiative thought she was a fairy tale, and they're a lot closer to the problems than people living on some other planet! ] but I'm a Slayer. The Slayer, right now. She Who Kills Monsters and Has No Social Life.

It's a whole "destiny" thing.

[she was pretty sure it was a self-explanatory statement. but it's evident that this girl was not listening, nor was she interested in the explanation. she has been determined to be offended because there have been dangers in her life, and she has had to face them. as does everyone. Sif lifts an eyebrow, cool]

Am I to apologize that you have had to fight to preserve peace? That even though outside threats that you flaunt your ignorance of have menaced your planet, a few from within it have required your intervention? Then you must try to imagine my apology.

[turning around to leave] As I will try to imagine your appreciation. [from somewhere else. you can't win with humans, they want you to intervene, and they get upset at the intervening, and then they complain when you don't intervene, and -- ugh, she so does not care about your species this much, and she never has, and she never will]

[antiapocalypse]

[ she watches Sif go, and then -- lets out a long sigh, her shoulders slumping a little, and mutters to herself ]

Way to first impression, Buffy. I think your social skills might be getting a little rusty.

[ she couldn't help it, though. stupid and petty though it was, the idea that someone's been watching over them -- and didn't bother to intervene with everything that's happened in her life -- means... what? that what seemed like enormous, almost unsolvable problems were just that insignificant? that she is just that insignificant?

kind of a lot to take in, and not all that pleasant.

what is a frost giant anyway ]
