You know, in the days we have been here, laboring and taking meals, I haven't heard anyone sing. In Asgard I am hard-pressed to go anywhere without someone thinking to lighten the mood with their dulcet tones.

Don't tell me not a one of you can hold a tune!

I'm afraid my singing voice requires a great deal of alcohol to work correctly.

I can't say I don't understand the logic, but I'm afraid I haven't yet found any ale trees. Insert spigot, receive ale.

And that, I daresay, would make this place a paradise.

I wouldn't mind it myself... [tilting her head back, looking up at the sky] But even a paradise would grow tiresome after a while.

Any place grows tiresome eventually as long as you have your wits. [ Only the Tranquil get to escape that bit of fact. ]

Well, to keep us from paradise a while longer, I will valiantly attempt a song while being unfortunately sober. [ Ahems. Does a passable rendition of Lovely Joan. ]

[she laughs, and then applauds dutifully] That was a fair rendition, Hawke! No apologies necessary for that. And a fun song as well, I might add.

Oh, I can hold a tune—provided it's on a record or a cassette in my hands and not anywhere else.

[are you implying Thor is not a Disney princess?]

Well, unlike some people of my acquaintance, I don't believe in forcing the tuneless to sing just because I like it. But I don't understand -- records and cassettes?

[langsyne]

[does that make Sif the Disney prince?]

Yeah, you know those those round black discs [outlining the shape with his hands] you put on record players? They're a little scratchy but still sound great?

[pause. wince.]

I'm dating myself, aren't I?

[HE'S NOT THAT OLD YET.]

[that sounds right, honestly]

[she laughs a little obligingly, but says] Not to me, for I do not know the discs of which you speak. I take it they are a type of instrument?

[she really doesn't understand]

[wow now he really feels old.]

Not really, they're— [small pause while he tries to figure out how to explain record players] like machines, inventions that—well, you can record music on them and then play it back later if you can't listen to something right now. So if you were to song a song right now and record it, you could play it back later and it would sound exactly like how you sang it, except probably fuzzier.

Does that make any sense?

It does -- and what a clever invention! I'm a little put out that one of our sorcerers hasn't been doing that for centuries, to be honest with you. [it would spare her a lot of Volstagg attempting to sing]

[That gets half a smile out of him.He'd grown up with the things and they're still one of his favorite things in the world.]

I'd try and make you one here except....well.

[Insert vague gesture here meant to reference the lack of available materials. That, and he's not sure if he can build one without referencing blueprints of some sort first.]

Yes, at the moment we lack most... civilized tools. [which is a little frustrating, but she tilts her head] Were you there -- the day before we arrived on the island? When we were in the building with the desks, and the machines?

[A nod. For as mundane as the situation had been, it'd also been one of the most emotional days of his life.]

I'm still wondering how they got us all here from there. I don't see any office buildings around here. You think they drugged and tossed in a fast jet plane?

[He's only half joking about that.]
