[morning of day three. there are clouds out and Allen loves them. he's pretty much given up on shirts and is just grimly bearing with his bright pink sunburn. the video shows him, and what he's working in his hands -- one dark red and exoskeletal -- is some thick grass, weaving several strands together to make a rope. he has a pretty decent amount of it. he's been working on it since the first day]

I feel really strongly that we should make a net so that we can catch more fish. [so that he can starve less. paaaause] But it's taking longer than I'd like. I don't suppose anyone else has any rope to contribute... [he trails off, staring at the water. it looks so cool and blue and inviting. and full of fish]

...You know, never mind. [shoving himself up and steeling his pink-and-red shoulders] Does anyone know how to hand-fish?

[Bruce is -- actually -- leaping around on the sand. Just flat out hurling himself into the air and landing in a crouch on the ground a few feet away, and then turning around and observing the results with his thinkingface on before hunkering down to do it again. What the hell is he doing? Find out!]

[emends]

[ ...Welp. ]

[ Lucina stands a careful few feet away, one hand swathed horizontally above her forehead to make it easier to see. ]

Bruce? Are you alright? [ HE ATE THE BERRIES, DIDN'T HE. ]

[sublimating]

[he lands with a stumble and then reaches up to pull off his glasses and -- oh hey there. smiling awkwardly] Lucina... Hi. Yeah, I'm -- doing all right. Definitely not -- suffering some sort of heatstroke-induced madness.

[emends]

[ That's good to know, even if she doesn't especially believe it. ]

...Are you certain? [ Why is everyone so strange. ]

[sublimating]

Yeah. There's a perfectly good explanation for this. [he looks around, as if trying to think it up, but admits] I'm just -- testing the springiness of the sand.

[emends]

[ Lucina's very, very close to deciding everyone here is crazy except for her. ]

I wasn't aware sand was normally, ah, "springy".

[ She moves a bit closer, although not yet invading his personal bubble. ]

Perhaps it would be best if you sat in the shade for a few minutes.

[sublimating]

Nah, I'm fine -- really. [he musters a rueful smile for her] I'm a scientist. Testing stuff is -- kind of what I do.

[emends]

[ The scientists she knows are scholarly mages, dedicated to studying and recording the logistics of -- everything. Maybe this would be the sort of thing Laurent would do? She has a hard time picturing it, although the mental image of his hat flying off as he tackled the sand almost makes her giggle aloud. Almost. ]

Is there scientific merit in testing the sand?

[sublimating]

I was wondering what sort of lift you could get. [he squints up at the sky] If we -- generated enough force that we could send someone flying, how far would they get? How strong would they have to be to swim to land?

I know it sounds a little crazy to even consider swimming for land, but... [heh] I might know someone who could do it.

[emends]

It might be more prudent to consider building some sort of vessel. [ She's politely ignoring his speculation of someone swimming to land, because there's no land to be seen on the horizon so clearly the heat has fried his poor Bruce brain. Here's your plan B. ] That said, the stars last night were foreign to me. Navigation might be difficult.

[sublimating]

You can navigate by the stars, huh? [let's talk about something other than his deranged behavior] That's a pretty neat trick. I only really know one to look for, and I didn't -- see it last night, but I'm not really familiar enough to be alarmed by it. It wouldn't surprise me to learn we're somewhere completely unknown to any of us, though.

[emends]

We were spirited quite far, and twice-over, [ she agrees. ] It is possible that it will happen again. [ A slight smile for Bruce. ] -- I've never been one for sitting around and waiting for possibilities to occur, admittedly.

[antiapocalypse]

You weren't kidding about that up idea, were you?

[ refresher course in Buffy: she means the conversation they had the other day about rafts and directions of escape from their captors ]

[sublimating]

[glancing back at her, and then -- chuckling, raking a hand through his hair] Testing for... hidden trampolines. That's me.

[antiapocalypse]

Ooh, look for hidden bouncy castles next. I begged and begged when I was four. The only thing I wanted more than a bouncy castle at my birthday party was a clown.

[ beat ] I got the clown. Turns out clowns are kind of scary.

[sublimating]

Yeah, that was definitely the raw end of the deal. I hope you've had the privilege of using one since then.

But just in case -- you'll be the first to know if I find anything remotely fun.

[antiapocalypse]

It's on my bucket list. [ no, not yet. :( TRAGEDY. ]

I knew I could count on you.

[sublimating]

That's me. Dependable... Banner. [squinting out at the water, and then back at Buffy]

[antiapocalypse]

That sounds suspiciously like sarcasm, Mister.

[sublimating]

Who, me? Nah. If you can't rely on the -- unemployed nuclear physicist on the run from the authorities leaping wildly around in the sand on the beach, who can you rely on? [quirking a smile at her]

[antiapocalypse]

I'm beginning to think they just don't make grownups like they used to.

[sublimating]

Yeah, if you want my advice... don't have anything to do with any of us, just, in general. We're bad news.

[antiapocalypse]

[ she grins ] Good advice. I think I can handle myself, though.
