[morning of day three. there are clouds out and Allen loves them. he's pretty much given up on shirts and is just grimly bearing with his bright pink sunburn. the video shows him, and what he's working in his hands -- one dark red and exoskeletal -- is some thick grass, weaving several strands together to make a rope. he has a pretty decent amount of it. he's been working on it since the first day]

I feel really strongly that we should make a net so that we can catch more fish. [so that he can starve less. paaaause] But it's taking longer than I'd like. I don't suppose anyone else has any rope to contribute... [he trails off, staring at the water. it looks so cool and blue and inviting. and full of fish]

...You know, never mind. [shoving himself up and steeling his pink-and-red shoulders] Does anyone know how to hand-fish?

[ Chuck thinks she looks so nice when she's smiling and happy. Of course, if he had his way, everyone would be happy all the time.

But he chuckles at her question. ]

Yeah, sort of. They're really me trying to be funny. Because "angel" is a word people misspell a lot, and if you switch the e and l around you get "angle". [ See, see, Lucina, isn't he funny? ]

[her eyes immediately lock onto it because she's still not sure if it's horribly burned or not, but no -- it's not really a burn. it's weird?! wait, for all she knew, he might have had a tragic accident and her question could be bringing up horrible, painful memories--]

You don't have to hide it!! I'm sorry I yelled, I was just a little surprised -- [she realizes that she's still staring at his arm, and hastily looks at the net. DON'T STARE PETUNIA!!] Wow, your knots look very nice! Those are very tight-looking knots...

[ he is. and he had very little in the way of a childhood! but never mind. ]

Well, there's always climate change. Maybe it'll start. [ slightly droll. he doesn't seem about to join you just at the moment. ]

Wouldn't dream of taking it away from you. You're, what, fifteen? Common-law married to the thing by now.

[ he raises his eyebrows just a little though and says ] I was actually planning on... paying you. Enough that you could buy your own food.

...No. [ slightly blank. wait, are we talking about me or you now. ]

The Order technically paid me, but I imagine they paid their personal chef quite a bit to keep him from taking his talent elsewhere. I doubt I'll be able to keep one stowed away in my room. [although how tempting would that be]

[ehe. scratching his cheek and lowering his arms. he will pretend that is a graceful topic change, then] Yes, ah-- Thank you. I'm sure professionals would laugh but I have a small amount of training in practical things like tying knots... You could do it too, though, they're not very hard.

Well, yes, holding doors, proper address, that sort of thing... Though I admit I can't think what keeping thoughts away from women has to do with being polite--

Wait -- are you suggesting I might want women to be treated like second class citizens?! [SCANDALIZED]

I hope you understand that that's a terrible argument. [he takes another bite of his fish, and rakes fingers through his hair as he chews thoughtfully. then] There's no need for it, and we don't know what the consequences will be. Let's just be reasonable about this.

[yes running with it, his arm is still on the back of her mind, but she's just as eager to pursue this weird change in subject]

Do you think so? I used to tie fishing knots when I was little, but I wasn't very good. [her attempt to learn what Elijah liked to do even if it meant making horrible fishing knots] Did you have to make nets like this while you were traveling?

[ she laughs! can't help it. she gives him a squinty, amused look ]

Hey, it's a thing that happens. I'm glad you're not one of those guys.

[ his lips turn up more and more! ] Yeah, I don't... usually feed my employees. They also don't usually live with me. But we'll talk to Pepper, figure something out.

I see. [a fleeting smile crosses her face, in spite of herself] That's a very romantic tale! It must have been a fascinating game.

[ It would be comforting to know that Allen is being reasonable, but that would mean realizing and admitting he's not all that circumspect right now.

He turns the hammer's handle between his fingers and seriously considers just doing it. But a glance at Allen makes him, reluctantly, shelve that thought. He's not sure what the other's reaction would be, and pissing off his friend just isn't something he wants to do. (Which bothers him no small amount.)

Sigh. ]

Fiiiiiine. [ Leans back on the sand and pillows his head beneath one arm. ]

Well, then it seems congratulations are in order. He's a lucky man. [a smile for her. that's right, she barely knows either of you, but he should count himself lucky]

Oh, the best! [sighs dreamily] In six months, they get to tour the whole country in celebration of their victory. It'll be my first tour, too. [assuming, of course, whatever is going on now stops]

[Sif has nailed it. we like Sif. we like Sif a lot.] Thank you. On both counts. I'm pretty lucky myself, but don't tell him that. [saucy wink. possibly she looks a bit childlike, what with a small handful of tiny seashells, but hey. girl talk. she doesn't get much of this back home. who has the time?]

[ She can see that! Lucina, on the other hand, is relentlessly realistic. ]

That's all well and good, but don't forget we have a task to complete. [ I'M HELPING. :D ]

It might be more prudent to consider building some sort of vessel. [ She's politely ignoring his speculation of someone swimming to land, because there's no land to be seen on the horizon so clearly the heat has fried his poor Bruce brain. Here's your plan B. ] That said, the stars last night were foreign to me. Navigation might be difficult.

We speak different languages, Chuck. [ She's gentle in informing him of this but, yeah. His clever wordplay is lost on her. ]

[that's better. quietly reassuring] You'll feel better soon. Hopefully sooner if you take it easy. Then we'll know that you're fully recovered.

Absolutely not. [yes, repeating, firmly] Absolutely not. Some of the strongest, most wonderful people I know are women. Lenalee and Miranda have helped me so many times, how could I ever wish them anything but the best, just because they're women? Then there's the Holy Mother, I wouldn't want to cross her, and General Klaud is one of the best Exorcists in the... [he starts to slow again, and trails off with a sigh. can't go on]

If you're so rich, I don't see why you can't afford a personal chef for an employee dining hall of some sort. It seems like it would be good for morale.

This is just one of many excellent ideas I can offer you while looking out for your public image.

Very rarely. I'm sort of figuring it out as I go along. [ehe] But after a few days I think I have the knack for it!
