[morning of day three. there are clouds out and Allen loves them. he's pretty much given up on shirts and is just grimly bearing with his bright pink sunburn. the video shows him, and what he's working in his hands -- one dark red and exoskeletal -- is some thick grass, weaving several strands together to make a rope. he has a pretty decent amount of it. he's been working on it since the first day]

I feel really strongly that we should make a net so that we can catch more fish. [so that he can starve less. paaaause] But it's taking longer than I'd like. I don't suppose anyone else has any rope to contribute... [he trails off, staring at the water. it looks so cool and blue and inviting. and full of fish]

...You know, never mind. [shoving himself up and steeling his pink-and-red shoulders] Does anyone know how to hand-fish?

That'd upset them, too. [ amused. he doesn't pick up the fish, but he does keep it from flopping in the wrong direction, pinning it to the stand with his stick ]

[ okay, that's -- almost a little suspicious! she eyes Zero, then says ]

We should start a club. Fast reflexes and the teenagers who have them.

That I could stand to see more often. [crouching is getting uncomfortable, so she sits on her bent legs instead, careful not to lose any hard-earned shells]

[now, as for colors. this is obviously Very Serious, so she puts on her Thinking Face -- a slight frown, pursed lips] Red and gold, obviously. Black, white-- you know, it's mostly just anything that doesn't involve bodily harm. [like sunburns. she should probably get in the shade soon, now she thinks of it]

[Petunia catches the sight of Allen working diligently on his....BIG NET and trudges on over.]

Do you need any help? [h-hopefully he does! then she can help!!]

[it has the tenor of another smug jerk comment, but for all Allen knows there's actually a Ragetti on the island] I haven't met anyone by that name--

[wait! innocence hammer?] Hammer? You don't mean Lavi, do you? That's right, his hammer and my arm are both Innocence weapons.

I'm not a savage.

[everwalking]

[he looks up at the sound of her voice, and smiles at her, straightening] Oh-- Miss Petunia. I would love help if you're sure... I'm really making very slow progress on my own. Four hands are better than two, right?

Isn't that what I said?

Yeah, he mentioned something about... ordained by God, blah blah blah. Very fancy. [ he eyes the arm a little more. the visible crucifix on your hand is a nice touch. definitely not indicative of child abuse. ]

[antiapocalypse]

Good. I mean, I wouldn't blame anyone for going a little native around here, but... [ she trails away, and then grins at him ]

I'm Buffy, by the way.

[ She will do this, then. ]

How are you this morning, Allen?

[ The scientists she knows are scholarly mages, dedicated to studying and recording the logistics of -- everything. Maybe this would be the sort of thing Laurent would do? She has a hard time picturing it, although the mental image of his hat flying off as he tackled the sand almost makes her giggle aloud. Almost. ]

Is there scientific merit in testing the sand?

Then they would be invited not to share in my catch and mind their own business while they're at it. [completely disinterested in the offense of these ridiculous-sounding people]

[Sif recognizes Pepper from their conversation, and angles toward her purposefully. she's been meaning to speak to her, and this seems like a good time]

What are you rooting about for? [smiling easily as she treks over the wet sand]

[actlikealady]

This trial will only last for six days. [she squints up at the cloudy midday sky] ...After that, we may find ourselves somewhere else -- or with other tasks, that I may be less suited for.

But this, travel and danger... I have known this all my life.

[possibly it's because "travel" and "danger" occur in very controlled and ultimately life-threatening circumstances in Effie's world, or possibly it's because she remembers thinking Sif would be a sure victor in any Games-- but to hear that this has been Sif's entire life saddens Effie. she imagines Sif on the run from wild beasts out to kill her, betrayed by allies, and narrowly avoiding being struck by very deliberate lightning bolts. well, there goes some of her cheer]

Oh, my. That's... well, you certainly seem stronger for it. [trying. trying so hard not to fawn over Sif like she is a tribute. it would really not help matters that Sif is so much taller. it wouldn't work very well!] And you've been marvelous here. Why, having you around makes me feel very safe indeed!

[onehotpepper]

[victory! a small victory, but a victory nonetheless in the form of a little keyhole limpet. smiling, Pepper looks up when Sif approaches.] Seashells. [lifting her hand up for Sif to see the few she has found] I used to do this when I was a kid, on the rare family vacation.

[brightens!] Right! I can't catch fish with my hands so I might as well help with something else.

[she takes a seat and picks a side, surreptitiously looking over at Allen's knot-making--]

[except, that means she gets to look at Allen's beautiful arm, and her eyes almost pop out of her head]

--Y-your arm!! Did you fall into the bonfire yesterday?!

[she steps closer and peers at shells] They are -- pretty. [she says it somewhat uncertainly, like she's not sure. is that an appropriate response to shells?] You went to the beach with your family?

[actlikealady]

As you should. No terrestrial threat will harm us so long as I draw breath. [loftily]

[obviously the current situation... concerns her. but she's keeping it well under wraps, trying not to think about the magical power required to nullify and transport and isolate them all; trying to focus on the possibility that Thor, now that he is not here, will manage to rally efforts at home to help her. she is confident in her ability to handle anything that might threaten a human, and most things that might threaten Aesir, so while it is not inconceivable that there will be a threat she can't master, she is confident nonetheless, straightening her shoulders]

[shows of confidence count for a lot, so Effie relaxes a little. surely Sif can handle whatever these... Gamemaker types throw at them] And if there's anything, however small, that I can help you with-- well, that's what I do, attend to the small things so people like you can think about the important things.

[onehotpepper]

[that response satisfies Pepper, who pulls back her hand and nods] Not very often. That made every time more special, though. [glances briefly at the sand, then up at Sif] Are Asgardians big on family vacations? [she says it in as light a tone as she can, unsure if this is a sore spot for Sif. Pepper is only curious]
