[ On one section of the beach, about twenty feet from where the sand gives way to jungle, someone has planted a giant mallet head into the sand. A bright, red scarf is tied to the handle. The handle sticks straight up--

And up--

And up into the sky. If you're good at estimating height, you might guess it's two hundred feet up above the ground. And at the very top, you can see the shape of a person up there. ]

[ She has no idea how he did it (some sort of shifting molecular base, perhaps?) but Gwen has to admit, it's a good idea. ]

Excuse me, hey! [ Sounding as polite as she can for someone having to shout, Gwen waves to try and get his attention. ]

[ It takes a moment for her voice to reach, but when it does, Lavi peers down at the tiny person on the ground. ]

Yeah? What d'you need? [ Calls back as he begins to slowly shrink the handle, making his way to the ground. ]

[ A coconut toddy from Sri Lanka. ]

[ Gwen is sure she had a more practical question to ask. What comes out is: ] How do you do that?

It likes me. [ Steps off the hammer, and has a seat on the head. ]

Guessin'... you're not a native. [ He grins, but it's tired. There's a trail of drying blood along the side of his head, and hand-shaped bruises above his collar. ] What's your name? [ Pretty girl. Striiiiiike. ]

Of the island? [ She makes the tiniest, thoughtful frown and her gaze goes half over her shoulder for a second, as if there's a whole bevy of native islanders parading behind her.

There aren't. ]

No, I just woke up here.

[ Finally giving him her full attention, Gwen's expression changes visibly when she notices his eye (or lack thereof). She settles on smiling politely. ] It's Gwen.

Don't see many redheads where you're from?

Ah... nope! [ She knows she's been caught, but she takes his hook and runs with it. It helps abate the feeling of awkwardness. ] They're pretty much an endangered species these days.

[ He would wink at her if he could! She seems pretty quick on her feet. ]

Shame, shame. We're a pretty fun bunch.

Have you seen anybody else around?

A few people, yeah. [ Ex-boyfriend, for one. It's not a subject she's eager to get into. ] I think they're all trying to rally for the shelter.

[ Pushes himself to his feet and shrinks the hammer to palm sized. ]

Not a bad plan... any idea where they're meeting?

[ She can't help but lean in a little as he does that, head ducking just a smidge to inspect the hammer.
